Most plants will do quite well when grown indoors. There are some things that you can do to help assure your success gardening indoors. House plants do need more or less the same conditions to grow as outdoor plants do. The indoor gardening tips suggested here will help you to achieve these conditions.

The conditions that are required by all plants, whether they are indoor or outdoor plants are:

- a good supply of fresh air,

- the proper amount of sunlight,

- water and

- fertilization

This requirement is fairly easy to achieve and most often, this is not even considered when planning a garden. For an indoor plant, the air requirements are basically the same as they are for us. When it is hot and stuffy for us, the same holds true for our plants.

Proper Amount of Sunlight

Photosynthesis is the process that plants use to get the nutrients they need from the soil and water. This process takes place in the plants leaves and is directly related to the exposure that the plant gets to sunlight. Without sunlight, your plants will starve to death. Be sure to place your plants so that they will get sunlight every day.

An alternative to placing plants in the sunlight is to purchase indoor gardening lights, or “grow lights”. Without an indoor area that will allow exposure to sunlight, these lights will provide the needed ultraviolet light to keep your plants growing strong.

Water

The challenge is to provide your plants with the proper amount of water. Many indoor plants die due to either over-watering or under-watering.

When watering, you should use water that is at room temperature and wet the soil enough that a small amount of it will stick to your finger when you touch it. The soil should feel damp and slightly soft. The soil should not feel “squishy”.

Using pots that provide proper drainage for your indoor garden is an excellent way to help keep from over-watering. If there is no drainage in the pots that you use, be sure to place small stones in the bottom of the pots before planting and water carefully.

In the summertime, watering should be done every two to three days to keep the soil from drying out. This can be safely reduced to every 4 to 5 days in the winter.

Fertilization

Since plants get all of their nutrients from the sun and the soil, proper fertilization is another important consideration for indoor plants. Fertilizers provide nutrients to the soil and in turn, to the plants.

There are some types of plants that require specialized fertilizers, but most common indoor plants can use a basic fertilizer. The schedule for fertilizing different types of plants can also vary. Cheap Greenhouses – Looking to Build a Greenhouse on a Smaller Budget?

Cheap Greenhouses do not necessarily equal low quality greenhouses, or at least they don’t have to.

Cheap is relative to the size of the greenhouse that is wanting to be built.

So for this reason they can be broken down into two groups:

* Large – Walk in
* Small – Cold Frame or Cloche (can be made using a clean used milk jug, or by using an innovative building method with 2L pop bottles)

In building cheap greenhouses, and expecting to build one of quality, you may have to put a little ingenuity and elbow grease into it. Chances are that if you find an inexpensive kit at a store, the materials that the company used to make it more than likely are cheap. I personally have fell victim to this a number of times.

Although I did purchase a very inexpensive small greenhouse that I use to start seeds indoors. It has done a great job for me, and it was cheap. It fits my growing light and it creates a great little environment for my indoor plants, and to start seeds, but that is a different story in itself.

So back to it, if you want a greenhouse that is not going to break the budget chances are you are going to need to build it yourself. This can be done quite easily with the right plans or idea. And if well thought out, planned and executed, can be quite simple and rewarding.

There are a number of different materials that can be used to make a cheap and simple greenhouse. Keep in mind that it is the cost of these materials that will determine the final price of your Greenhouse.

It is through some savvy shopping practices that will determine the size of the greenhouse that can be made. The less you spend the more you can buy or acquire. And the more you acquire the bigger the build.

Quality of Materials:

The quality of the materials that are used will determine the lifespan of the project. For example, if the decision is made to build a greenhouse using 2×4′s and poly film or plastic, all of which can be purchased at your local hardware store, there is a difference in the quality and therefore the longevity of each product.

Here is an example of the quality, in the example of a greenhouse made using 2×4′s and poly film:

1) 2×4′s: There are a few choices that can be selected from-

* Natural (least expensive) – this is the most in-expensive option. However, it is also the option that will not last. The warm moist climate of a greenhouse is the perfect environment for wood to rot, so untreated or natural wood will likely deteriorate quickly.
* Pressure Treated (mid price range) – this wood will likely last a long time, however, if looking to grow vegetables organically it is probably not the best choice as this wood is usually treated chemically.
* Cedar (most expensive) – this is a natural wood and is likely the most expensive. Cedar is a natural beautiful wood that withstands rot without any treatment. This why so many beautiful greenhouses are made from Cedar.

2) Poly Plastic: There are also a couple of choices available for this as well-

* Poly Plastic (Hardware store) – this is in-expensive, however, will yellow and become brittle in the sun and will usually not last longer than a season.
* Poly Plastic (Greenhouse Grade) – this poly has been UV Treated and is usually guaranteed for 4 years, but often lasts longer.

Please keep in mind that there are many different ways to build a greenhouse, many different ways. There are a lot of plans available on the internet, to give both inspiration or just a step by step do it yourself build.

Types Of Rock Gardens And Planting Ideas

There are many forms of rock gardens that you could use in your garden. In this article are just a couple of ideas that you could create for your family and friends to enjoy, not to mention yourself.

Scree:

A scree in nature is an area of loose rock at the bottom of a gully or cliff. Small stones predominate, but there may be some sizable boulders included. In this competition-free environment a number of splendid alpines may flourish, and there are ways in which a scree can be created in a homes garden.

The most satisfactory method is to dig out a strip of soil from a well, shade free part of a rock garden – ideally this should be between large stones and out as it descends. Inside this dug-out area place an 8 inch layer of scree compost ( one part top soil, one part peat or leaf-mold and 3 parts of grit or gravel ). Another place for a scree is at the boundary between a lawn and a rock garden. Use an edging to keep the small stones off the grass. Where a rockery is absent you can create a scree bed in a sunny spot in the garden. Remove soil from an area and fill it with an 8 inch layer of broken bricks or stones topped with a 2 inch layer of course sand or gravel. Add an 8 inch layer of scree compost to bring the level to the surface.

When planting, shake off as much compost as you can from the roots, when planting is finished place a 1 inch layer of chippings over the surface and under the leaves. A number of small stones bedded into the surface around the plants will improve the appearance of the scree. Recommended plants include Aethionema, Erodium, Penstemon, Phlox and Silene.

Raised Bed:

This is an increasingly popular way of growing rock garden plants, easier, cheaper and less space-demanding than a rockery. A height of 3 ft. is recommended and the retaining walls can be made with bricks, stone, reconstituted stone or railway sleepers. Where space permits, an upper terrace or a series of terraces can be built on the bed to create extra interest and a place for trailing plants. Clear away any perennial weeds before you begin and lay a concrete foundation if the walls are to be more that 1 ft. high. Provide weep-holes at the base if mortar-bonded bricks, blocks or stones are the building material.

When the walls are finished, add a layer of bricks, rubble or stones if the soil below is not free draining. Cover with grit and fill with standard planting mixture. Leave a 2 inch space between the surface and the top of the retaining wall and wait a few weeks before introducing the plants. Top up if necessary. Choice and planting technique are the same as for the rock garden.

The use of trailing types to partially cover the top of the retaining walls is especially important. Cover the soil with a 1 inch layer of stone chippings – the use of larger stones is a matter of personal taste but the are an aid to plant growth because the plants themselves can grow over the rocks and create a wonderful look.
